Denby Sweeting

(1936-2020) British

Denby Sweeting was born in Clifton, Bristol in 1936, and brought up in West London.

From the earliest age, painting was his primary interest, and he was encouraged by his parents, both of whom had an artistic background. By the age of 13, he was receiving commissions from his family and friends.

His intention was to attend Art College, or enter the film industry as a scenic artist. The premature death of his father, however, led him to be advised to seek the security of an apprenticeship in cabinet-making.

After some years, his enduring love of paintings and some limited experience in restoring pictures encouraged him to open a Gallery, and from this, restoring became his primary occupation. He became a member of the I.I.C. (International Institute for the Conservation of Historic Works of Art). Also around this time, he was a Founder Member of the Federation of British Artists and exhibited at the R.B.S.A. in the 1980s.

With over thirty years experience in painting restoration, high quality 19th Century Dutch, Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite artists influence his style of painting. Denby favours such subjects as British domestic animals, including rare breeds, English flowers, wild flowers, domestic birds, butterflies and bees. Previous solo exhibitions have been held at Binfield, Bradford, Weybridge, Gregynog Hall in Powys Mid Wales and Shrewsbury.

Denby can be regarded as the logical contemporary extension of 19th Century fine quality painters. His importance as a great realist painter is instantly recognisable by the knowledgeable viewer, who enters with him a world they both know and revere. In the studio at his Mid-Wales home Denby continues to produce, with realism and sensitivity, pictures that are highly sought by collectors throughout the world. It is a great privilege to us at the Mitchell Studio Gallery to be associated with Denby Sweeting and to present an artist of the finest calibre.
