Mabel F Hollams

(1877-1963)

Remarkably little is known of this very competent horse portraitist. She was married to Charles Lionel Fox, steward and land agent to the Fairlawne Estate, which was owned by the Cazalet Family, who were well-known racehorse owners and trainers. Mabel studied at Frank Calderon’s and Julian’s in Paris and exhibited at major exhibitions between1897 – 1929 from Tonbridge, Kent. Primarily known for her horse portraiture, she also painted flower and figure pictures; although she painted conventional horse portraits, Mabel favoured a rather unusual idea of painting horses on polished wood, showing the grain of the wood as the background. Her work was extremely good and life like. Her patrons included the Earl of Sefton, Lord Cornwallis and Lord Beatty. Hollams became ASWA in 1899 and Society of Women Artists in 1902 exhibiting 19 paintings. Ackermann held an exhibition of her work in 1934.
